This time, I will write a short diary about the process of "Grand Cross" arrangement.
Dec.28th
Started the programming of "Grand Cross". Only the basic part, Drums and synth bass.
Jan,1st
Happy New Year!
Jan.2nd
Went to "Strawberry picking" in Shizuoka prefecture. During the return rush, I thought that unison phrase of real electric-bass & guitar will be better than the synth bass.
Jan.3rd
Forgot the positive image of the idea which I got yesterday. So, I started programming the synth bass. But, in midnight, I changed my mind again, and changed it to "real bass & guitar". I also started programming the keyboards.
Jan.4th
Recorded the bass guitar for the demo. And I also tried recording the guitar by myself. But I was depressed every time I listened to the recorded guitars.
Jan.5th
Continued my work. Searching for an idea for the Ending part. I put the simple Ending that time.
Jan.7th
I got the idea for the ending part, which image is like" nightmare". And I finished making the Rough-version of the arrangement.
Jan.9th
Sent the demo to Uematsu-san.
Jan.10th
Got a several advice from Uematsu-san.
Jan.17th
One week had passed working for the other works. But, the idea of the intro with Guitar and Bass came to me. Satisfied and slept well.
Jan.18th
Used the idea which came to me yesterday. Added the "Hell voice" in the introduction, and finished arrangement!
Then, I fixed the detail part and brushed up the sound. After adding the recording sounds of the members, the Grand Cross had finally finished its arrangement. The music got the Groove by each member's live recordings, and got much more better than my Demo sounds. I hope you have fun listening to it!

いよいよ発売日まであとわずかとなってきました!
おかげさまで、各ショップでの予約状況も好調なようで、
皆とても期待してくれていたんだな、と早くも感謝の
気持ちでいっぱいですよ!
さて、今日はレコーディングでいつも感じていたことを話しましょう。
普段はゲーム音楽制作、宣伝、営業、学校教官、などをやっている、
いわゆる普通のサラリーマン達6人。この我々が月に何度かスタジオに
集まり、そこで録音を重ねていくわけですが、これがとにかくいつも楽しい!!
日頃の疲れなんてお互い感じさせないんです。
録音の時は楽しみながらも真剣そのもので真面目にやりますが、
休憩時間や食事時間には、世間話や音楽談義、お笑いの話にバカ話、
時にはPS3やWiiなどでゲーム大会なんかもしながら、とにかくみんな何歳よ?!
っていうくらい騒いだりしますね。
ほんと修学旅行の夜みたいな感じとでもいうか。(笑)
でも、そんな楽しい仲間だからこそ、録音の時にもお互い言いたいことが
言えて、「ここ変えてみて」「もっと違うパターンにして」なんて遠慮なく
言いあいます。もちろん言われた方も嫌な顔一つすることはありません。
ほんとすばらしい仲間です。
そんなメンバーが共に楽しみながら、そして真剣に作り出しているアレンジや
音を是非皆さんにも楽しんでもらえたらこれ以上の喜びはありません。
どうかこのアルバムにあなたの好きな曲がありますように・・・(^^)

There's only a few days until the releasing date of "Darkness and Starlight"! Thanks to all of you, there is a lot of pre-order in each record shop. We're very thankful already to your positive expectations to the album.
Today, I will write about what I felt from the TBM recordings. We usually work as corporate employees like video-game composer, publicity job, sales rep and instructor. So, having a chance to meet at the studio twice a month in our busy days is really a big fun. So, we couldn't see any tiredness between each other in this recordings.
When we started the recordings, we will concentrate and get serious, but having fun at the same time. When there's a time to rest or eating dinner, we didn't talk only about musical things. We talked about many stupid things, and sometimes we played the PS3 and Wii together. It was like a school trip! How old are we??!
We are a good friends, and that's why we do not hesitate to ask or request something to each other. We requested a different phrase if someone felt that it's not the right phrase, and keep doing a discussion without being cross. Yes, they are really a wonderful pal.
I hope you have fun listening to the sounds which we created with both getting serious and also having fun. And I wish there is your favorite song in this album. ;->

いよいよ発売が近づいてきましたね〜!?
一つの作品を作り上げたという充足感と、皆さんが楽しんでくれるかなぁ・・・という
気持ちが混じりまして、まさに恍惚と不安二つ我にアリな状況であります。
今回ワタクシは「Darkness and Starlight」part3の他に、
「Neo EXDEATH」と「The Extreme」のアレンジを担当させていただきました。
初めて宣伝を一人で任されたFFVと、初めて宣伝プロデューサーで参加したFFVIII
それぞれのラスボス曲ということで、仕事で苦労した分、
非常に思い入れのある曲でもあります。
前作での担当曲「Maybe I'm a Lion」では、原曲にはないリフを組み合わせたりして
オリジナルからの飛躍を試みてみましたが、
今回のこの2曲についてはそんな個人的な思い入れもあって、
なるべく原曲というか「あの当時、オレの頭の中で鳴っていたであろう音」に
TBMスタイルで近づけていくというアレンジの方向性を探ってみました。
正直「うわ〜〜ココはどう表現していこうかなぁ〜〜???」なんて、
悩んで涙目になっちまったところもありましたが、最終的には納得いく所に
もっていけたと確信してます!
それと、「Distant World」ではフクイ先生のエッチ・・・もとい、
しっとりとしたアレンジにソソられまして、中間部で魂のガットギター・ソロを
弾かせていただきました。フクイ先生によるリリカルなピアノ、
そしてラスト怒濤の関戸さんギターソロと合わせまして、
かなり感情を揺さぶられる展開の曲になっていると思いますよ〜〜!
その他の曲それぞれにもいろいろ語りたいことがタップリと詰まってるんですが、
スペースがまたまた足りなくなりそうなのでこの辺で・・・
では!

March 14th Michio Okamiya
Finally, the releasing date of "Darkness and Starlight" is getting near! I feel the accomplishment that we finished creating the album, but I'm also nervous when thinking about how you feel when listening to the album. I have both in my mind, "ecstasy and anxiety".
This time, I did the arrangement of "Neo EXDEATH" and "The Extreme"in addition to "Darkness and Starlight Part3". "FINAL FANTASY V" was the game which I was in charge alone in the publicity department, and "FINAL FANTASY VIII" was the game which I worked as a advertising producer for the first time. Those were really a hard time for me working for a big project, so I have a special feeling for those 2 music pieces.
When I arranged the "Maybe I'm a Lion"in our 2nd album, I made an original riff, and tried to develop dramatic. But this time, for that reason, I tried not to change too much from the original arrangement. And also I tried to realize the sound which was played in my mind then, by using the TBM style. To be honest, there were a few point which I grew teary-eyed by suffering, how to express the original feelings. But finally, I think that I was able to find an acceptable way!
In the middle part of the "Distant Worlds", I played the soulful gut-string guitar solo which was inspired by Fukui-san's erotic.....No, mellow arrangement. In addition to the lyrical piano of Fukui-san, and the storm of Sekito-san's Guitar solo, it will surely touch everybody's heartstrings!
I have a lot of things I want to say for each music, but it seems that there isn't much space to write, again....

今回は担当した「Premonition」のアレンジのお話を
させていただきます。
まず原曲の全般にわたって鳴っているアルペジオはめちゃめちゃ
好きだったので、このアルペジオを活かしつつ、
原曲の特徴的なアクセントや変拍子は外さないように、
リズムパターンを組んでいきました。
テンポは原曲とほぼ同じです。
01:23〜01:38のリズムパターンとギターのリフが出来たころには、
バンドアレンジでもいい雰囲気が出せる手応えがありました。
演奏上各人に休憩する場所も必要なので、複雑なフレーズの後には、
比較的シンプルなモノを配置すると言う感じで、その辺りのバランスを
考えながらパターンやフレーズを検討し、ようやく1コーラスの完成です!!
その後、構成はオルガンのアドリブへと続きますが、
コーラス部分に戻ったときに最高に気持ちよくなるように少しコードを変化させて
シンセソロへ移ります。
この後の展開を「ハイライト」として扱い、TMB3アレンジでは
1小節のブレークを挟んで同じフレーズを2回繰り返しています。
エンディングではもうひとヒネリほしいなー!!っといろいろ悩んだ結果...
ついに!? イメージを音にする事が出来ました。

Hello, this is Tsuyoshi Sekito, the guitarist.
Today, I will write about the arrangement of the "Premonition", the song which I was in charge.
At first, I love the arpeggio which was played in whole part of the original music, so I decided to keep it alive, I also keep the irregular meter & the accent of the original, and built the rhythm pattern.
Tempo is almost same as the original.
I was sure that it will be a nice band sound, when I finished making the rhythm pattern & guitar riff, between 01:23〜01:38.
For playing it live, I had to make a "break point" for each musicians. So, thinking about the balance, I put the simple phrase after the complicated phrase. Then, the 1st chorus had finished!
After that, the music went on to the ad lib phrase of the organ. Trying to make the music exciting when it goes back to the chorus, I changed the chords a little, and continued to the Synth-solo.
After the Synth-solo, I decided to make High-light part for this TBM version. So I repeated the same phrase twice after the 1 bar break.
I had wanted the sophisticated ending this time, so, after a lot of hair pulling, I finally could find the best sounds for the ending. And the sounds is like the title "Premonition"???
